Task 1: EXERCISES

3000 Words - Team Human by Douglas Rushkoff

I chose to use this chapter of the book as the content for my project because Douglas Rushkoff articulates and criticizes the state of our current society and the views of digital media in such an intricate yet straightforward manner.

I came across Rushkoff from a podcast and his points instantly drew me in and genuinely left me thinking on the spoken topics even after the podcast was done. He mentioned he was an author and I knew I had to pick up one of his books to see what else he has to say and so I did. I picked up another book of his titled 'Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus' and it made me want to read and know more about his takes on how to be more human in a vast digital world, so I read Team Human.

In Team Human, and many of his other books, Rushkoff questions important questions about new media and how we as humans live today which allows readers like me to open my mind and do the same. I think it's important (especially the younger generations like me) to step back once in a while from our brightly lit screens and observe what is going on and how things work.

We then had to create our own margins for our book trying different options.
The first one is the one I m leaning towards the first one but I still have to experiment with different ones.

Layout Attempt 2

Layout Attempt 3

For the final layout, I combined layout 2 & 3

Title Custom Font

For the title, I decided to combine and edit the 2 words as if they were melted together so that they would fit the liquidness of the font.

Front Cover options

I knew I wanted to use the full illustration as the front cover so I tried placing the titles in between panels. After asking feedback from a few peers, They agreed that option 3 looked best as the title felt like it fitted between the panels better.

Graphical elements

After I was satisfied with the final layout, I added graphical elements to fill excess space and give the book more style consistency. I added halftones throughout the book so that it would give off the same comic feel of the front cover and illustrations, throughout the pages.

Black & White Mockup

The printer shop I went to didn't follow the crop marks provided to cut the pages of the book so some details close to the margins were gone. They asked me to pay anyway since they had a policy i had to follow and it was not cheap. But I took this mockup as a way to feel the book size and paper material in my hands and I was happy with that. There were subtle alignments issues I did not catch from the screen which I refined later in Indesign.
