Video & Sound Production Exercises

LECTURES

Week 1: For the first week of class, Mr. Martin briefed us on the module. He introduced himself and made us familiar with the projects we will be having throughout this semester. After that, we had a short in-class exercise using Premier Pro.

Week 2: This week, Mr. Martin lectured us on cinematography to prepare us for our first filming exercise. He lectured us on the history of film and the different types of camera shots and angles and how that would work for different scenes.

Camera shots:
  • Extreme wide shot
  • Wide shot
  • Medium wide shot
  • Medium shot
  • Medium close-up shot
  • Close-up shot
  • Extreme close-up shot
  • Over-the-shoulder shot
Camera angles also depend on how we use the rule of thirds in our frame. It is advised to keep a subject on the lines of the grid to keep a pleasing composition. Each different camera angle also gives a different meaning to the scene.

Camera angles:
  • Low angle
  • Eye angle
  • High angle

INSTRUCTIONS

WEEK 1 EXERCISE 1&2 - VIDEO EDITING

For this exercise, we had to arrange clips from an advertisement in the right order. This exercise allowed us to familiarise ourselves with the Adobe program for future knowledge in upcoming projects.

FEEDBACK

Week 1: No feedback

Week 2: The lecturer said my shots were all good and fit the type except for the low wide shot where it needed to show my feet in the frame.

Week 12: Audio Shaping cave and stadium sounded kinda similar in terms of echo and they were too soft

Week 13:

REFLECTION

Week 1: The introduction of the class was exciting and Mr.Martin had great enthusiasm towards the class and what we'll be learning. It made me look forward to it! I've always had a slight interest in filmmaking and scenes being it and this class allows me to dip my toes in its water so that I could get a taste as well as learn something new. Exercises 1 & 2 were pretty simple for me to understand as I've used Premiere Pro before this class. Nonetheless, I still have a lot to learn.

Week 2: Filming the framing exercise would've been more than it was if it wasn't on such a hot day but nonetheless, it was fun with the help of my sister. My favorite part of the process, however, was during post-production when I could edit it to fix any tiny errors, as well as color grading the video to have a more harmonious tone. The editing exercise was a good warm-up for me to get used to the software. I learned shortcuts that would make workflow much faster

Week 3: The shooting exercise was fun to film with the help of my sister making it tolerable but other than that, collaborating with the group was frustrating at times. Working through the hardships and focusing on the learning outcome, the process was a good learning experience.
