Final Project: Self-Titled

Lecture Notes:
Week10: The lecturer briefed us on the final project which would test our knowledge on everything we've learned so far in class. Mr. Fauzi lectured us on After Effects techniques we could use in our project such as in and out animation.

Project 4

Sketch
fig 1.0 image self-portrait

In this digital artwork, I want to visualize breaking free from conforming to perfection

Inspired by the concept of punk movement and cyber punk design, I wanted to visualize self insurgence by using a self portrait in those styles.

Because being a perfectionist as a creative in this industry can be a drawback, I want to practice breaking from that habit as i find my own title/style as an artist

Digital Drafts
When digitalizing my sketch i didn't like how crowded and messy it looked. So the last draft i did had a neater composition.

Animation
For the animation, I wanted to add a certain type of suspenseful feeling known by genres of dystopia and punk. So for that, i added sound effects of digital typing and police radio chatter as well as adding a glitch sound.

After consultation with Mr. Fauzi, He suggested I add handwriting as well as another title/ quote to further convey my message.

Final Animation

For the final piece, I put together a self-portrait which gets interrupted by a glitch along with a bold title stating “DON’T CONFORM” which conveys my message of self-insurgence against conformity as an artist.

To further express my message in this artwork I included a quote from an author, Virginia Woolf which writes, “Once conform, once do what other people do because they do it, and a lethargy steals over all the finer nerves and faculties of the soul. She becomes all outer show and inward emptiness; dull, callous, and indifferent." and a saying by Henri Matisse that says "Creativity takes courage."

Inspired by cyberpunk design, I added elements and audio such as static, handwriting over text, digital typing, and police radio chatter in the background to deliver the feeling of futuristic dystopia.

Feedback:

Week 10-11: Mr Fauzi suggested i use a different image and create more variety of sketches.

Week 12: Mr Fuazi liked my composition style and gave ideas for animation such as adding the glitch as an animation instead of using it as a still image

Week 14: Mr Fauzi suggested I add another quote or title at the top space because my message can be hard to come across at first glance.

Reflection:

Week 10: Starting this final project, I was nervous because it had to be about me which makes it hard to focus on one single topic. Other than that I was excited to use the knowledge I've learned over the semester about college and after-effects for this project.

Week 11: Sketching the idea and finding references was relatively easy when I knew what i wanted the outcome to look like. Taking the portrait photos was kind fun too because I got to dress up but finding the right pose for the work was tricky.

Week12: After sketching the idea, Digitalizing it was straightforward forward but I wasn't satisfied with how the digitalization of my sketch came out so i took the idea and played around with it some more until i liked the composition.

Week13-14: These 2 weeks have been me figuring out after-effects and its features. After-effects is pretty complex when it comes to all the hidden features it has but I had fun learning because now I have the knowledge on using it again if I ever need it. After a few edits, I was happy with the results and was grateful for the feedback given by the lecturer.
