Task 3 / Type Exploration and Application

Lecture Notes:

Week 10: Mr Vinod Briefed us Task 3/ Project 2: Develop a font with the accumulated knowledge from the lectures and your own reading that can solve a problem or be a part of a solution in the area of your interest. Come up with a typeface to be used.
- solve a problem
- how it will look like used
- study your area of interest, look at how type is used in the area and identify potential weaknesses or possible areas of further exploration.
- Understand the existing relationship and see what to improve upon

Week11 -14: There were no lectures on these weeks

Refinement stage

After sketching out the main idea for the font, I wasn't satisfied with the thickness of the letters so I went ahead and refined it by thinning and elongating certain areas in the typeface to make it look more fluid and irregular.

14/6/21 fig 2.1 Refine stage 2- Defining outline

Digitalization

After i was satisfied with the way it looked, I digitalized it to prepare for any more minor edits.

14/6/21 fig 3.1 Digital Outcome

After analyzing the type side by side, I decided to thin out some of the strokes to show emphasis on the bold strokes  and further convey the visuals of eroded edges

FINAL WORK

Making it into a font:
After I was completely satisfied with how the type looked, I headed to Font Forge a free software to create fonts and imported each letter asset.

Animating:
To further visualize the distortion of hallucinogenic effects on the type, I attempted to animate the word 'Psych' on After Effects.

Once I was satisfied with the motion of the text, I would next add colour as suggested by Mr.Vinod.

Application

I was inspired to create a gif by including the animated font onto a scene from the HBO series 'Euphoria' because in the series the main character, as shown in the gifs below, experiments with hallucinogens while coping with her drug addiction and I wanted to mimic that using shots of her facial expression while on hallucinogens as I showcase the movement of the type.

Feedback:
Week 10: Mr Vinod advised to further research on my topic to find a more solid objective

Week 12: Mr Vinod advised to try animating the type by using tools such as photoshop timeline and blend tool.

Week 13: Mr Vindo suggested I try animating with colours and figuring out the application of the font as a final collateral

Reflection:
Week 10: The briefing of this final project was exciting I wasn't as scared to start it because Excercise Type & Play Part 1 is similar to this project so I had a running start in learning how to create my own font. Coming up with an idea was the hardest part for me as I knew I wanted to do something fun and unconventional.

Week 11-12: These 2 weeks have consisted of a lot of sketching for how I want my font to look. Doing research on old psychedelic fonts which have dated back since the 1960s and how they implement it into posters have been really interesting to learn.

Week 13:  After refining the font to the final look, I attempted to animate a text. I had this idea at first wanting to animate it but it was scary to think about the process because I have little to no experience in animating but luckily youtube tutorials exists.
