Project 1: Digital & Physical collages

LECTURE NOTES:

WEEK 1: For the first week, we were introduced to the module and briefs of the projects expected this semester. The lecturer then went through with us what design principles were and how it is important to practice them in our work. He then briefed us on our first exercise.

WEEK 2: We were properly briefed in detail about our first exercise in the second week. For the first exercise. we had to choose and identify our collage's design elements to be cut out and composed into our own concept & story.

WEEK 3: Mr. Fauzi lectured us on the common basic tools in Photoshop to prepare us for our next exercise.

  • Lasso Tool, Pen Tool, and Layering
    • - How to alter the image to change the narrative
  • Lasso
    • Allows you to draw and pinpoint an area
    • Cut and paste an object from a photo
    • 3 options:

      • Lasso
      • Polygonal
      • Magnetic
    • Better to use with a graphic tablet because it's similar to a pencil

  • Pen Tool
    • To create paths
    • The way you drag the tool as you create the points determines how they will look
    • Fewer points = Smoother lines
  •  Lasso vs Pen tool
    • Pen tool can be used to create extremely precise shapes and paths, using manually placed anchor points.
    • Although it is commonly used to make selections, the pen tool was not originally created as a “selection tool”
  • Layering
    • different images stacked on top of each other.
    • use each layer without affecting another one to make an adjustment
    • The advantage of using Layers is that you can save a Photoshop file with all the layers included.
      •  non-destructive editing.

WEEK 4: Mr. Fauzi lectured us on the other basic tools in Photoshop like adjustments and filter to prepare us for the next exercise.

Adjustment Layer
  • non-destructive image editing tool
  • add color and tonal adjustments without changing image pixels
  • can edit and discard your adjustments or restore your original image at any time
  • Brightness / Contrast
    •  makes adjustments to the tonal range of your image.
    • adjusting shadows and highlights
  • Levels
    • modify the tonal values in an image by adjusting the levels of the shadows, mid tones, and highlights.
  • Curves
    •  adjust as many points as you want throughout the entire tonal range of your image
  • Exposure
    • adjust only the highlights of the image,
    • offset adjusts the mid-tones and Gamma will adjust the dark tones only
  • Selective Colour
    • selectively modifies the amount of a primary color without modifying the other primary colors
Filters
  • change colour, add blur, or create completely new image effects
WEEK 5: Mr. Fauzi breifed on upcoming projects in week 6 and 7. No other lecture was given.

INSTRUCTIONS:

WEEK 1

https://bezier.method.ac

We were asked to list down your 3 favorite graphic design work from Pinterest and explain why I like the designs. Here are the ones i chose:
 Design #1:

Description: In this work, the artist put together carefully cut-out photos of a child sitting with a bird on a rope held by hands. This photo montage caught my eye because of how it’s perfectly cut out and put together to form an almost conceivable image despite the unrealistic scale between the subjects. This photo montage also reminded me a lot about the control of a parent in a child’s childhood. Design #2:

Description: This artwork has a humorous yet provocative narrative because of the choice of the image but i think both photos fit perfectly well together and it blends seamlessly with the reactions from the crowd which makes the image tell a story. The use of ‘gigantic’ scales of humans is commonly seen in collages and they are one of my favorites because it tends to hold an amusing visual.

 Design #3:

Artist: Lynn Skordal Description: I really liked this piece because the images relate to one another from background to subject. The use of color in the images to show the ‘insides’ while the rest are desaturated shows a good contrast. This piece is titled ‘Mysteries of the Mind’ which is a suitable title because it shows a narrative of wanting to find/discover something.

Week 9: AFTER EFFECTS EXERCISE

This week's exercise required us to compose a 15-second video animating in after effects using assets from photoshop.
As the given assets included a film camera and type writer, I wanted my composition to look like it was telling story / a story is emerging out from the typewriter.

This is my result:

FEEDBACK:

WEEK 1: There was no feedback given this week.

WEEK 2: There was no feedback given this week

WEEK 3: Mr. Fauzi liked composition #2. He mentioned it was symmetrical, has focal point, hierarchy, and eye flow is just falls into the right place.

WEEK 4: Mr. Fauzi chose composition 2 to be refined for this week.

WEEK 5: Mr. Fauzi said that my third attempt has too much contrast and that he prefers the initial edit without any adjustments as the composition and colors fit well together already.

REFLECTION:

WEEK 1 : As it's the first week of class i was excited that the composition and colours photo manipulation and the editing software Photoshop. It seems to have very comprehensive teaching on each tool which is important for a graphic designer to master.

WEEK 2: This week we started out the first-ever practical which was to create a composition/collage out of paper clippings. I didn't have a lot of magazines or newspapers around so i had to go to the recycling center to get some but the process of flipping through images and coming up with ideas was engaging. I had to go to the recycling center to get some, but collages where we had to implement last week's knowledge on composition. We were also lectured on the basic tools we should know in photoshop. Although I've had experience using the software and tools, the practice of using it again allowed me to brush up on my knowledge.

WEEK 9: This exercise allowed me to practice features in after effects and I was excited to learn and get used to the program as I have always wanted to start. Features like masking is a different process compared to photoshop and ai so it was confusing at first but I figuring it out made things a lot easier especially for future projects.
